Reading Time
Estimated reading minutes based on a standard reading speed. The median book takes about 228 minutes, but individual times range from 69 to 613 minutes.
Section Count
The number of text sections in each book can indicate how it is organized—whether it’s a continuous essay or divided into many chapters. This helps you anticipate the structure.
Comparing Books: What the Numbers Tell You
Compare Books lets you place two or three titles side by side to see their word counts, estimated reading times, text sections, sentence flow, chapter rhythm, and subjects. These numbers are descriptive, not evaluative. They help you gauge the commitment a book asks for and the pacing you might expect.
The most immediate use is to judge length. A 20,000-word book and a 140,000-word book are obviously different commitments, but the difference can be surprising when you see it in reading minutes. The tool makes that concrete.
Word Count and Reading Time
Word count is the most basic measure, but reading time makes it tangible. For example, The Beggar's Opera; to Which is Prefixed the Musick to Each Song — Story, Setting & Ideas has 24,293 words and an estimated reading time of 106 minutes. The box of whistles — Edition Insights is nearly identical in word count at 24,247, also 106 minutes. Yet these two books are very different in structure, which affects how the time feels.

Text Sections and Chapter Rhythm
